Picture: Alpacas grazing in the paddockThere are two types of Alpacas (Huacaya and Suri) and we breed them both! We also breed two colours, ie black Huacaya and white Suri. Originally, alpacas came from South America. In Australian, Alpacas have a lesser detrimental affect than other grazing animals on the land due to the ‘soft’ foot aspect of the alpaca. A side benefit is that alpacas in a paddock with sheep or goats will protect the lambs or kids from foxes. They also can be easily tamed and encouraged to come ‘home’ each night for a small hand feed supplement that will delight children (or the inner child in all of us!)

Alpacas were first imported into Australia at the end of the 1980’s and today there are 2,300 breeders across the nation and 75,000 alpacas registered with the Association. It is a well established Association with a wealth of information available through their Website. For example a quick history of these amazing animals can be gained from www.alpaca.asn.au/info/history.shtml
